The outsole also provides terrific traction and can even handle groomed trails or softer surfaces with little difficulty. Speaking of durability, the Pegasus 39's mixed Duralon, BSR 1000 rubber outsole is top-notch, and runners should be able to go for hundreds of miles in these shoes. Given that Nike designed the Pegasus 39 to be a versatile and durable daily trainer with comfort in focus, the lack of responsiveness from the midsole shouldn't count against the shoe. That said, the Pegasus 39 can tackle tempo runs if you are really itching for some speed. Like other React midsoles, the Peg 39's midsole is not very responsive and isn't suitable for speed training. The testers also mentioned that they would have loved a bit more cushioning underfoot to increase protection over longer efforts and would recommend keeping the Pegasus under the 9K to 10K threshold. Sadly it is not all good news, as our testers experienced challenges with the forefoot Zoom Air pod, noting that the integrity of the unit broke down late into their testing period. Furthermore, the latest version of the Pegasus delivers an even more natural underfoot feel thanks to the new flex grooves on the outsole. A new Zoom Air pod configuration with units in the heel and forefoot helps add a dose of energy to each stride while providing additional shock absorption at footstrike. The React midsole remains highly resilient and incredibly versatile, never failing to deliver a smooth and comfortable ride that can handle nearly all of your daily training runs. This is by no means a diss! Frankenstein's monster was a beast with superhuman strength, and this winged workhorse is just that a mileage-eating monster with an aesthetic Frankenstein would be jealous of. Instead, the Pegasus 39 is a bit of a Frankenstein shoe, combining successful elements from past models and reconfiguring them in an all-new package. If we are being honest, the new Zoom Pegasus 39 does not completely reinvent the line and does not introduce a host of new, cutting-edge features. The upper features a familiar Flywire support system through the midfoot to help create a consistently secure lockdown that further saves on weight. The updates continue in the shoe's upper design, which delivers a lightweight engineered mesh that comfortably conforms to the foot. What hasn't changed is the Pegasus' incredible durability, as Nike continues to make small upgrades to the shoe's Duralon and BRS 1000 rubber outsole. Nike also continues to tinker with the embedded Zoom Air units in the midsole and has implemented a forefoot and heel double Air unit combo meal that promises to heighten the shoe's energy return and protection. This well-balanced and versatile neutral training shoe was engineered with a full-length React Foam midsole that is soft enough to protect your feet from the roads yet firm enough to remain stable and efficient.ĭespite 33 mm of foam underfoot, the Pegasus 39 is highly flexible thanks to a new flex groove layout, which makes for smooth transitions that roll naturally through the gait cycle. For the past four decades (that's right, four decades), the Nike Zoom Pegasus has been nearly synonymous with Nike Running, and over the years, this beginner-friendly workhouse has grown into an icon.
